چکیده

The authors demonstrate the fabrication of suspended nanowires and doubly clamped beams by using a focused ion beam implanted Ga etch mask followed by an inductively coupled plasma reactive ion etching of silicon. This method will demonstrate how a two-step, completely dry fabrication sequence can be tuned to generate nanomechanical structures on either silicon substrates or silicon on insulator SOI . This method was used to generate lateral nanowires suspended between 2 m scaled structures with lengths up to 16 m and widths down to 40 nm on a silicon substrate. The authors also fabricate 10 m long doubly clamped beams on SOIs that are 20 nm thick and a minimum of 150 nm wide. In situ electrical measurements of the beams demonstrate a reduction of resistivity from 37.5 cm down to 0.25 cm. Transmission electron microscopy for quantifying both surface roughness and crystallinity of the suspended nanowires was performed. Finally, a dose array for repeatable fabrication of a desired beam width was also experimentally determined. © 2010 American Vacuum Society. DOI: 10.1116/1.3497013

Incident angle dependence of nanogap size in suspended carbon nanotube shadow lithography

Suspended nanotubes or nanowires can be used in line-of-sight depositions to produce nanometre-scale lines. Reported here is the experimental quantification of line-of-sight shadow widths for multiwalled carbon nanotubes that are suspended (400 nm) over a silicon nitride (Si3N4) membrane (transmission electron microscopy) TEM grid by a lithographically defined resist line array. Aluminium evapo...

Low-temperature charge transport in Ga-acceptor nanowires implanted by focused-ion beams

Ga-acceptor nanowires were embedded in crystalline Si using focused-ion beams. The dc current-voltage characteristics of these wires after annealing are highly nonlinear at low temperatures, and a threshold voltage of less than 50 mV is observed independent of Ga dosage and implant beam overlap. These features suggest a Coulomb blockade transport mechanism presumably caused by a network of Ga p...

Characterization of silver-gallium nanowires for force and mass sensing applications.

We investigate the mechanical properties of cantilevered silver-gallium (Ag(2)Ga) nanowires using laser Doppler vibrometry. From measurements of the resonant frequencies and associated operating deflection shapes, we demonstrate that these Ag(2)Ga nanowires behave as ideal Euler-Bernoulli beams. Furthermore, radial asymmetries in these nanowires are detected through high resolution measurements...

Radiation-induced nanostructures: Formation processes and applications

Radiation-induced nanostructure formation is ubiquitous. It is routinely used in lithography employing photons and masks, or in the form of focused electron beams following a maskless approach for pattern definition in a radiation-sensitive resist, also commonly known as electron beam lithography. Examples of this are found in this Thematic Series covering the topics of selected-area silicon na...
